Italian Ministry issues a silver coin on World Nutella Day

On the occasion of World Nutella Day in the year in which the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the Ferrero company occurs, the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance issues a silver coin, minted by the Mint, dedicated to the historic product within the “Italian Excellence” series, with a nominal value of 5 Euros. On the front of the coin designed by the artist Annalisa Masini, a jar of Nutella is represented in the center, with the inscription “Italian Republic” around it. On the reverse in the center is engraved the reproduction of the Group’s factory in Alba, the largest and place where the company was founded in the 1940s. On the left is the name of the author; on the right the year of issue “2021”; under the main drawing there is the value “5 euro” and an “R”, identifying the Mint of Rome.

World Nutella Day was launched on February 5, 2007 by Sara Rosso, an American blogger who tasted the product during a trip in Italy in the 90s for study reasons. “I thought it would be nice to have a day where I could eat and cook with Nutella without shame. A kind of meeting of Nutella minds, or a Naa (Nutella Addicts Anonymous) meeting”, she explained two years later to the Los Angeles Times.

“The history and tradition of our entrepreneurial fabric have inspired some of the most beautiful coins in the recent numismatic collections minted by the Italian Mint. Through the art of engraving, we wanted to pay homage to the icons of Italian industry, which have become in real-time and its cultural heritage, often celebrated also in photography, cinema and music. And among the excellences and products that symbolize Italianness in the world, Nutella, the fruit of the intuition of the great entrepreneur, Michele Ferrero, who he brought out the first jar of the legendary cream from the factory in Alba, in the Piedmontese Langhe”, says a press release.
