San Felice vineyards, a legacy beyond words

San Felice: News & Tasting with Carlo de Biasi at ProWein, March 20 at 5 p.m. | Hall 16; B61

The San Felice vineyards have a history as rich and fertile as their soil. They go back to the time of the Etruscans – today the lands of San Felice cover a total of around 685 hectares, of which 188 hectares are planted with vines and 60 hectares with olive groves. The vineyards are located in the three most prestigious denominations of origin: Chianti Classico (150 hectares), Montalcino (23 hectares) and Bolgheri (15 hectares). With an annual production of 1.2 million bottles, including 1,025,000 bottles from Chianti, 80,000 bottles from Brunello, 40,000 bottles from Rosso di Montalcino and 55,000 bottles from Bolgheri. The wines are produced under 20 labels exclusively from the winery’s grapes.

The very first SuperTuscan, the Vigorello, was made here in the Chianti Classico area in 1968. A wine that has been recognized over the years for its elegance and longevity and which, with the current 2018 bottling, can look back on a proud 50 vintages. As unique as its reputation is its blend of 35% Pugnitello, 30% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot.

The product range of San Felice extends not only to wine, but also to olive oil, grappa and vinsanto. The estate also includes around 15,000 olive trees and most of the experimental fields, the Vitiarium , created in collaboration with the University of Florence and other research institutes with the aim of preserving the varietal diversity of Tuscany.

The company is managed by Chairman Mario Cuccia , General Manager Carlo De Biasi and Oenologist Leonardo Bellaccini , supported by a team of experienced winemakers and professionals. Since acquiring San Felice in the late 1970’s, Allianz has encouraged operations in their pursuit of excellence, investing in innovation and sustainability to protect the exceptional Chianti Classico territory and the people who live there.

Awards: The 2020 San Felice Chianti Classico DOCG is ranked 24th in the current TOP 100 wines, the annual ranking list compiled by Wine Spectator. In addition, in November 2022, this wine was awarded three glasses by the renowned Italian wine guide Gambero Rosso. The “youngest” wine from the San Felice house is the “Bell’Aja Bolgheri DOC” and it has already enchanted the most demanding international palates.
