Coffee stars grind it out in UAE’s first Latte Art Grading battle at Gulfood 2021

Coffee artists have been grinding it out in the Latte Art Grading Battle (LAGS) on the sidelines of Gulfood 2021, the most competitive global sourcing platform and first in-person F&B event in the past 12 months.

The LAGS Battle is one the most important national and international latte art competitions with artists ‘ranked’ in five levels: from white to black. And, just like in the martial arts, the latte artists must demonstrate certain skills during their battle to enhance their ranking.

Day four of Gulfood saw battles between the white and orange grades, while day five of Gulfood on Thursday 25 February will see green, red and black belts taking to the stage. Winners of the green, red and black grades will represent the UAE at WLAGS (World Latte Art Grading Battle).

The battles follow a stringent set of rules: participants must bring their own milk jugs; cups in which to draw the patterns are of 3 types: Espresso, Cappuccino and Big Cappuccino, selected by the LAGS organization for the competition; each pattern/design can only be proposed and launched for the challenge in the same cup once – this means that it is possible to repeat the same pattern/design but in a different size cup.
