Extremely durable tools reduce costs and increase efficiency

The High Performance Metals (HPM) Division of the international voestalpine Group is helping the food industry to operate more sustainably: Experts calculate that companies that produce food will be around 70 percent more efficient in the coming years need to be in order to remain competitive. For this purpose, HPM develops high-quality and extremely durable tools that can be installed, for example for meat processing. With voestalpine engineered products in production, the running times of the machines are extended, downtimes reduced and energy consumption lowered. The division itself also sets itself ambitious goals in the area of sustainability and summarizes them under the umbrella of “inSPire – Sustainable Performance”.

“The engineered products for the meat processing industry are important components for exploiting the potential for increasing efficiency in production,” says Reinhard Nöbauer, board member of the High Performance Metals Division. “Our components made of high-quality steel deliver excellent results in practice. Here’s an example: the combination of our materials with suitable coatings considerably lengthened the grinding intervals in an industrial meat grinder and thus helped to significantly reduce ongoing operating costs and downtimes. Our Engineered Products thus make a decisive contribution to ensuring the long-term competitiveness of our customers. “

The competitive conditions are changing rapidly with the sustainability goals in the food market: In the future, manufacturers and suppliers will be measured more and more in the supermarket supply chain on how resource-saving they work and whether they meet environmental protection goals. According to the Federal Environment Agency, the production and consumption of food, for example, are responsible for around a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. An improved energy balance is correspondingly important. The components made of premium steel help to meet new goals in sustainable production. As practice shows, sharper knives, for example, can be operated with considerably less energy when processing meat. Meat products that have been cut with precision tools have a significantly longer shelf life.
